A zippy underground train system allows you to travel around Nuremberg with ease and little cost. Most travellers arriving in the city fly into the busy, northerly Nuremberg Airport (NUE), while others prefer to travel by train, arriving at the city's centrally located Hauptbahnhof (Main Train Station) close to the medieval fortifications surrounding Old Town Nuremberg. The city's main public transport is explained below.

Nuremberg boasts its own busy airport, which is located around 7 km / 5 miles to the north, serving approximately four million travellers each year. The main airlines currently operating at the airport include Air Berlin, Air France and Lufthansa. Facilities are good, with a range of ground transport available, including car rental, underground metro trains and bus transport, allowing you to travel into central Nuremberg with ease. However, if you intend to fly into Nuremberg from outside Germany, it is possible that you will arrive at Frankfurt Airport, which is around two and a half hours away by train transport.

It is easy to travel to Nuremberg by car, with the city being located within a major network of inter-connecting motorways. Cars can be rented within the city itself, and also from various transport companies at Nuremberg Airport, such as Alamo, Avis, Europcar and Hertz, amongst others. However, within the city itself, it can be different to travel to specific locations. When in the Altstadt district, to reach another part of this area, it is often necessary to travel outside of this district and then re-enter at another gate.

Efficient bus transport is always a popular way to travel in Nuremberg and automated machines dispense bus tickets at the main bus station, where you can also purchase a map of the main bus routes. Bus stops in Nuremberg are easy to spot, featuring a yellow circle with a large 'H' in the centre, also being served by tram transport and night buses. The city's old-fashioned trams are a great way to travel around Nuremberg and there are currently six tramways in operation, linking many points of interest.

Regular trains travel to the city of Nuremberg from all over Germany, such as both Berlin and Munich, and also many nearby countries. The city also boasts an impressive underground train network, one of Germany's newest travel networks and known as the U-Bahn, where transport is both fast and cheap, connecting the main districts and attractions.
